Horse Radish Tree English name: Horse -radish Tree, Moringa, or Drumstick Tree
Thai name: Ma Rhoom
Botanical name: Moringa Oleifera Lamk.
Family name:
Moringaceae

Description: This is a kind of medium sized tree, normally about 3-10 meter high. Its leaf has an alternate, ovate, and oblong shape. It has white or yellowish white flowers, similar to the tamarind flowers. It has long pods.
As one of the fastest-growing of all trees, it can grow to about three meters in height, just 10 months after the seed is planted; the tree thus can propagate in every part of Thailand.

Horse Radish Tree
It is surprising that people across the country enjoy eating its flowers, young pods as well as young leaves as a kind of vegetable mix in sour soup or curry. The best and only time to eat this kind of vegetable, especially its pod is in November, December and January since it is the season for its pods. The pods, about 30 cm long, 3 cm broad, are often called 'drumsticks'. Its root has distinctive pungent taste.

Indications: The edible parts from its horseradish-tasting roots, young leaves, pods and flowers are all rich in calcium, phophorus, vitamin A and C, protein, iron, potassium, magnesium, and several other vitamins and minerals.
Its seeds contain an antimicrobial constituent.

Parts of Its Medical Uses:
a) Its flowers help urination and used as health tonic.

b) The oil from its antipyretic, acrid and bitter seeds is applied in rheumatism and gout.
